Join us for Doc & Discuss! In this Saturday series of events, we will be screening a topical documentary and holding space for a discussion about its topic afterwards. We will be offering light refreshments during the screening to all attendees.
April's documentary is Salaam Dunk: One team, one season, one Iraq. In this documentary, we will learn how basketball is much more than a game. This stirring documentary features an Iraqi women’s basketball team at the American University of Iraq – Sulaimani (AUIS) in Kurdistan. For the young women on the team, most of whom have never touched a basketball or been allowed to play any sport, it is a blissful release from the realities of a war-torn nation. They come from all ethnicities and sects – Arab, Kurd, Christian, Sunni, Shiite – but the joy they discover in playing and the deep love they come to feel for the young American man who coaches them reveals an Iraq that is united in a way we’ve never seen before.
This film was selected in honor of April being National Arab-American Heritage Month. We will start our discussion with some context about the release of the film and its impact on audiences since 2011 up through today.
Spend a cerebral Saturday afternoon with us at the library! We hope to see you there.
